This is pretty cool.
UTM allows owners of M1-based Macs to run virtual machines on the new Apple Silicon hardware. The software uses Apple’s Hypervisor virtualization framework to run ARM64 operating systems on Apple Silicon at near native speeds.
UTM also runs on Intel-based Macs, allowing for x86 and x64-based operating systems to be virtualization, and can also handle lower performance emulation as well. For developers and enthusiasts, there are dozens of other emulated processors as well including: ARM32, MIPS, PPC, and RISC-V.
The software is based on QEMU, a decades-old, free, open source emulation layout that is both widely used and actively maintained by its developer community. UTM retails for $9.99, requires macOS 11.0 Big Sur or later to run and could be one of the handiest virtualization tools to have at the ready.
If you’ve had a chance to try UTM, please let us know about your experience in the comments.
