As nifty and ground-breaking as the M1 iMac was, there may be a reason to avoid buying one this holiday shopping season. Per several user reports, the M1 iMac display features a major problem with the display that tends to surface after the standard warranty has expired.
Per Macworld and the Apple Support Community, several users report that the M1 iMac screen shows horizontal lines that hinder the screen’s usability. The users report that the problem appears over a year after the M1 iMac was purchased, and since the standard warranty has expired, the user must pay for the repair, which can cost $650 or more in the U.S.
According to user “Jotap62,” a technician who looked at the issue determined that the problem lies with a power cable for the LCD, which can wear out over time due to the high amount of voltage running through it. Given how the LCD is constructed, the repair requires the whole LCD to be replaced, making it quite expensive. And even if the repair is done, there is no way of knowing if the problem is permanently fixed.
Some users stated that Apple fixed the issue for free after the standard warranty expired, while others stated it took some convincing before Apple shouldered the expense.
Where the extended warranty is concerned, this issue is covered under AppleCare+, which retails for $60 per year or $169 for three years of coverage.
If you’ve seen this issue on your end, please let us know about your experience in the comments.
