To eulogize the eMac is difficult, but now when there is a Mac mini in its place perhaps a lot easier. The only thing to save the eMac I felt was the advent of the Mac mini and the continual need in business and education to have a reliable and reasonably damage proof shell obviously a faster processor would help eMac longevity.
But upgrades and the fact that most LCD’s and CRT’s are kind of meeting at a common price, makes the education user look at what are the advantages for education for retaining the CRT and the case is very strong indeed.
The flat screen CRT 17″ and 20″ have not really changed radically in quite a long time. I guess because of my recent retro stand, being quite attached to my old 17″ Apple CRT, that has led me to the questioning of weight verses durability and the CRT dilemma.
When does anyone pick up a LCD screen and move from a laboratory room to lecture room it is likely to be in an iBook or also in a Powerbook much less likely one would be to cart around the very heavy 20″+ Apple Screens.
I have already had one LCD screen fail on me in my iBook in less than 7 months which was promptly fixed under Apple’s warranty and that is an expensive exercise for some.
Within education generally the problem of the durability of displays is very much on the minds of the educators.
