According to a report from Reuters, Sprint PCS has announced a 3G-ready cellphone module to fit the Handspring Visor’s Springboard slot. News of the $250 module from Sprint follows hot on the heals of Handspring’s announcement that it would reduce the price of its VisorPhone module, which works on the networks of Cingular Wireless, Powertel and VoiceStream but is not 3G-ready, from $250 to $50 to increase demand.
A Sprint PCS spokeswoman mentioned several advantages that justify the higher price of the Sprint module. The Sprint PCS module will offer a wider service area than the GSM-only based VisorPhone. The Sprint module will only require a software update to take advantage of the high-speed 3G network that Sprint PCS plans to deploy in 2002. Finally, the Spring module will offer seven hours of talk time and up to 13 days of standby time.
