Palm recently confirmed at PalmSource 2000 that they will be using the SD (Secure Digital) expansion system in future Palm devices.?Currently there are over 160+ company consortium for SD established by industry leaders SanDisk, Toshiba, and Matsushita (Panasonic). In addition to SD the PalmOS currently supports multiple expansion and networking protocols such CompactFlash, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick (Sony Corp.), and Springboard (Handspring).
Palm’s recent adoption of SD may have you questioning why another protocol, well it gives the 100,000+ people in the developer community the opportunity to create new and exciting expansion hardware and software. The size of SD is truly impressive at 32mm x 24mm and a mere 2.1mm thick about the size of a postage stamp. SD’s ability to accommodate the layering of several flash memory chips will enable even higher storage capacity in the future. The current storage capacity of SD is 16, 32 and 64 MB which is quite larger then current built in PDA memory.
