Rumor: iOS 15, iPadOS 15 to feature revamped lock screen, new notification system

According to sources close to the story, Apple’s iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 mobile operating systems will feature a revamped notification system, plus lock screen changes, and increased privacy options.

The operating systems, which are expected to be announced at WWDC 2021 in June, and released publicly later this year, have been reported to feature prominent redesigns. Previous reports have suggested a new design approach for app icons, but the new leak claims that revisions will be made to the lock and home screen.

The revisions are said to be being made under the codename “Sky,” and are believed to to include an updated lock screen, tied to an extensive revision to notifications.

It’s thought that notifications will now come with controls that mean a user can customize them depending on their location, or activity. As with the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature, notifications could remain silent while a user is at work, but loud when they’re back home.

It’s also claimed that the lock screen will add a feature to allow users to quickly set their status. Rather than necessarily sensing someone’s location or the time of day, users could instead tap to set that they are working, sleeping, or so on.

This same Instant-Messaging-esque status could also be included in the Control Center, allowing for quick access without returning to the lock screen.

Users could also be able to configure automatic Message replies, similar to how the Do Not Disturb feature can already send a pre-written response to text messages.

Bloomberg has reported that while iPadOS 15 will offer a redesigned home screen, it had no further details. The publication said that Messages could undergo a revamp that bring it more in line with WhatsApp.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
