The rumor mill has Apple as beginning mass production of its long-awaited mixed-reality headset in Mach 2023.
According to DigiTimes, Pegatron will be the exclusive partner for the final assembly of Apple’s mixed-reality headset. Initial production was said to be very limited. Its price point will be too high for the consumer market, hence initial products will be targeted for commercial buyers.
Previous estimates indicated that the annual shipment for the device would reach 2.5 million units. As of now, rough estimates place the annual shipment around 700,000 to 800,000 units. For supply chain manufacturers that benefit from quantity, this is not a particularly profitable order.
The report also indicated that Apple’s partners are pushing to manufacture the headset despite the low profit margin. These partners are rumored to be eager to prove their technical capabilities as early as possible, thereby giving them a better position if Apple decides to produce the headset on a broader scale. It’s also thought that the manufacturing partners find it easy to raise capital money to fund their endeavors, thanks in part to Apple’s brand recognition.
Apple is said to have been working on augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality headsets for quite some time now. Due to several difficulties, the company has not made major progress on this endeavor.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
