Apple may be putting its Vision Pro 2 wearable headset on the back burner for a while in favor of working on a more consumer-focused model.
Per The Information, Apple has told at least one supplier that work on the next high-end version of the Vision Pro has stalled. It’s thought this is in response to slowing sales of the premium headset.
Apple is also thought to be working on multiple headset models, and the story’s anonymous source stated that development is going towards the cheaper consumer-grade model of the headset. This model, which offers fewer features and lower specifications, could ship before the end of 2025.
The lower-priced Vision headset has an internal codename of “N109,” with a potential price hovering around $1,600 if it is eventually released. The unit is also said to replace some components found in the original Vision Pro with cheaper versions, such as the internal displays offering a lower resolution and fewer cameras being used on the outside as sensors. Other changes could include slower processors, and the automatic initial focus setup may also disappear in favor of a manual version, as Apple tries to reduce the weight by up to a third.
It’s currently rumored that Apple has yet to complete a firm prototype of the N109, and while it could ship by 2025, it’s thought that the product could ship later, possibly into 2026.
Part of this is due to supply chain issues, the report continued. In one case, display maker Seeya Technology struggled to meet Apple’s standards for production, prompting changes in a key component for the headset.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
