REVIEW : Motorola PEBL V6

motorola-PEBL.jpgThe Motorola PEBL is a killer flip phone with a beautiful black matte finish and a unique dual hinge design that allows it to be opened with one hand. The PEBL looks more like a stone that you found in a riverbed and I bet it would make a pretty impressive skip rock.

motorola-PEBL.jpgThe Motorola PEBL is a killer flip phone with a beautiful black matte finish and a unique dual hinge design that allows it to be opened with one hand. The PEBL looks more like a stone that you found in a riverbed and I bet it would make a pretty impressive skip rock.
Two different triband GSM versions are available, depending on your area and carrier and both support high-speed EDGE data connections. The model I tested was on T-Mobile.
The PEBL features a bright 262k color 176×220 display inside and a monochrome 32×64 display on the outside that displays caller ID information as well as mundane info like signal and battery strength and a clock. It also features Bluetooth and a VGA camera that takes still photos as well as records MPEG4 video clips.
On the software side, the PEBL supports instant messaging via Wireless Village, SMS/MMS and POP2 and IMAP email. You can use MP3 ringtones and download JAVA MIDP v2.0 applications, games and screen savers. The PEBL also supports Motorola’s ObeyMoto speaker independent voice dialing.
The main issue for Mac users is that the PEBL isn’t on Apple’s iSync Compatible Devices list, although workarounds are available. You can request Apple support the PEBL on the iSync feedback page.
Overall the PEBL is comfortable and impressive. The speakerphone is loud and clear (a pet peeve of mine) and the bundled software is impressive. I tend to be a QWERTY guy and prefer more of a smartphone these days, but hey, that’s just me. If you’re looking for a sweet flip phone with high speed EDGE data support then you should definitely check out the PEBL.
The PEBL is available from T-Mobile US$299 with a two-year contract.
