Qualcomm has presented its latest 5G modem, and it could be an outstanding element to the next-gen iPhone.
In its latest annual release, Qualcomm presented the Snapdragon X65, a 5G-compatible model that could allow for cellular speeds up to 10 Gbps, which could potentially mean faster download speeds to consumers if carrier conditions are favorable.
The modem is also the first 3GPP Release 16 modem-RF system, supporting the latest specification from 3GPP that offers various improvements to cellular connectivity. This includes specifications relating to power consumption and MIMO usage. The unit is also said to feature an upgradable architecture that could add software features and capabilities as part of the 3GPP Release 16 rollout. This can increase speeds further or introduce entirely new features.
The module is also engineered to pair with Qualcomm’s QTM545 mmWave antenna module pairs, which can support a higher transmit power. Qualcomm has also jumped on the opportunity to mark the unit as having the world’s first “AI antenna tuning technology,” which could allow the unit to use artificial intelligence to further enhance connectivity. Through this method, Qualcomm has stated that the unit can detect hand grips with 30 percent more accuracy, allowing the modem to switch antennas for better signal.
Qualcomm is also including its 5G PowerSave 2.0 technologies, which use 3GPP Release 16 power-saving initiatives such as Connected-Mode Wake-Up Signal. It also has Smart Transmit 2.0, a “system-level technology” to increase upload data speeds and enhance coverage, while remaining within RF emissions requirements.
It’s presently thought that the new modem could appear in a 2022 iPhone model as opposed to the 2021 releases. The X60 is anticipated to appear in the upcoming “iPhone 13” models.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
