Purported component adds to triple-camera theory for some 2019 model iPhones

From the depths of Rumorville, a photo posted on Thursday from Chinese social network Weibo claims to show a component from a 2019 model iPhone with cutouts for three lenses.

An early claim suggested that the third lens would be a 5x telephoto one, as well as being used to provide enhanced augmented reality capabilities …

The photo, tweeted by Ben Geskin, aligns with earlier claims of a purported schematic, in which three lenses are arranged in a triangle shape, along with square cutouts likely for flash and AR sensors/microphone.

Per a Wall Street Journal report from January, it’s been rumored that that triple-camera configuration would be exclusive to the top-end model. A conflicting report suggested the option might be available on the smaller flagship phone too, but limited to the higher storage tiers.

Other sources have stated that this might be a component from an engineering validation test (EVT).

Largan Precision, which makes lens modules for the iPhone and other phones, said it was confident of orders for triple-lens cameras this year – but Apple was not specifically named as a potential customer.

If nothing else, rumors of a larger “camera bump” on the upcoming iPhone models have remained consistent, if highly debated among customers.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
