According to screenshots leaked by noted leaker John Prosser, a test model of the upcoming 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max indicates that the handset could feature a 120Hz display as well as a LiDAR scanner.
The screenshots are said to be from a PVT (Production Validation Test) model of the handset, and featured settings include a toggle to enable “LiDAR” for “assisted auto focus and subject detection for Video and Night Mode.”
The menu also includes an option to “Enable High Refresh Rate” and “Enable Adaptive Refresh Rate.” An addition setting also says “the device will alter the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz in accordance to the content displayed on-screen.”
There have been a number of mixed rumors as to whether the iPhone 12 will offer 120Hz ProMotion technology, and display analyst Ross Young noted that Apple is facing supply chain issues with the 120Hz display driver ICs for the iPhone 12 Pro. It’s thought that Apple may opt to ship with 60Hz displays or delay the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro models.
Prosser claims that some of the 6.7-inch PVT iPhone models are equipped with 120Hz displays and some are not, and the alleged settings screenshots do mention the existence of both.
Additional rumors have suggested that the iPhone 12 Pro units will feature a LiDAR scanner similar to the unit offered on the 2020 iPad Pro models.
It’s unknown as to how valid the leaked screenshots are, especially considering some questionable wording in the images, as well as unusual spelling, capitalization, and wording that Apple typically doesn’t use. Prosser has offered an explanation by suggesting the wording here is “written for people testing the units,” which can’t be confirmed.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
