iFixit publishes teardown of Apple Watch Series 6, cites larger battery, larger Taptic Engine, other changes

Once again, the very cool cats at iFixit have performed a nifty teardown, this time dissecting the brand new Apple Watch Series 6.

The analysis found a 3.5 percent larger battery in the 44mm Apple Watch Series 6 as opposed to last year’s model, while the battery in the 40mm Apple Watch Series 6 is 8.5 percent bigger. How or whether that translates into more battery life remains to be seen, as the new model has new sensors and a new system-on-a-chip, the Apple S6 System in Package, or SiP.

iFixit also noted that “the smaller 40 mm Series 6 retains the radical metal-pouch design introduced on the Series 5, now with a 1.024 Wh capacity.” The 44mm model still doesn’t use that design for the battery.

iFixit also cited that the Taptic Engine in the Apple Watch Series 6 is larger, although the reason for this has yet to be disclosed.

The Apple Watch Series 6 was also noted for retaining Apple’s thin design ascetic, scaling down from 10.74 millimeters in the Apple Watch Series 5 to 10.4 millimeters in the Apple Watch Series 6.

Other changes included the following:

  • iFixit found a “thicker rubber-like adhesive on the display and back plate” that may add more protection for “unwanted ingress,” as in intrusions into your Watch. The company noted that made it harder to get into even when you’re trying, too.
  • Screen replacements are possible, according to iFixit.
  • Apple Watch Series 6 opens from the side like a book, as shown in the hero image above.

If you’ve been able to get your mitts on the new Apple Watch Series 6 and have any feedback to offer about it, please let us know about your experience in the comments.
