For those of us that have been lugging around the Kyocera 6035 Smartphones for the last year and have been envious of our friends with a HandSpring Treo, Kyocera/Verizon have finally released the Kyocera 7135 Smartphone. Verizon Wireless (Web site not updated) was supposed to have the 7135 available last November, but rumor has it that several software issues had to be resolved before the phone could be released.

I have had it for a week now and there are two major improvements. The first improvement is the size of the phone. It is actually wearable on your hip without looking like a complete geek. The clam shell design also better protects the screen from damage. The second improvement is speed. It is noticeably faster when running Palm OS applications.

Using Eudora Mail on the 6035 was painfully slow. Other improvements to note: Color screen, Palm OS 4.1, MP3 player, Media player, faster data network access (up to 144 Kbps) using Verizon’s Wireless Express Network.

So far, my only complaint is that the MP3 player and Media Player that are included with the phone require a Wintel PC to upload files. Other than that it is a great phone, especially if you need to keep in sync with your Mac. More images are posted on my Web site.
