I would not normally cover developments from PC maker Gateway, but certain things just bring a smile to my face. First off, their recent print ad campaign prominently features — PowerBook G4s? Check their prominent two-page spread in PC Magazine this issue (January 2003): underneath the headline “Digital fun made easy!” is a goatee-equipped audiohead enjoying tunes from his Titanium PowerBook. Hey, that’s my idea of digital fun made easy! Watch your stock photos, guys. Hey, if Dell can sell iPods, why not PowerBooks from Gateway? Then we could take advantage of Gateway’s buy one, get one free sale on its high-end laptops and desktops. If you’re not smiling yet, read the Wired News story that calls Gateway the “struggling Poway-based company.” Although, I have to admit, I would endure the days of Apple being called “struggling” again if I could get two-for-one Macs.
