If you’re headed to Puerto Rico, this could definitely come in handy.
Apple on Tuesday expanded its Apple Pay system to Puerto Rico, allowing for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users living in the territory to be able to use Apple Pay for purchases in retail stores and online, even without a mainland credit or debit card.
Although Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, Apple Pay had not been available through Puerto Rico banks, though Puerto Ricans have had access to the Apple Card and have been able to use Apple Pay with U.S. credit and debit cards.
At present, Banco Popular in Puerto Rico supports Apple Pay, allowing the bank’s cardholders to add eligible cards to the Wallet app to use as a contactless payment method. Banco Popular cards can be used at any location that accepts Apple Pay.
The Apple Pay system first launched in 2014, and has since expanded it to dozens of countries and territories throughout the world.
