The glowing Apple you loved on your MacBook notebook may be making a return alongside the SD card reader, MagSafe on MacBooks, and the startup chime.
According to a patent filing discovered by Patently Apple, Apple is working on “A backlit partially reflective mirror [that] may be used to form a logo or other structure in an electronic device.” Given the contents of the patent document, the technology could be used to create a cool glowing Apple logo on the lid of a MacBook notebook.
In a move that broke many a Mac geek’s heart, Apple stopped using the illuminated Apple logo in 2015. While the company never offered specific reasons for the change, some felt it was to save on manufacturing costs, while others felt it might have been to make the display thinner.
This new illuminated Apple logo wouldn’t just be the glowing white logo from the past brought back, but a modernized version of it. The patent describes the use of a reflective mirror that would offer the logo shine with a backlight while blocking the ability to see inside the lid. The mirror could be a “neutral color such as light gray or may have a non-neutral color such as gold.”
The patent also states that the technology could be used for a notebook, as well as “a computer monitor containing an embedded computer, a tablet computer, a cellular telephone, a media player…a wristwatch…a headphone or earpiece device, a head-mounted device such as eyeglasses [or goggles],” and more, which opens the door to all sorts of devices.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
