Apple Maps testing hints at data expansion in the United Kingdom and Ireland

This should be sort of nifty if you’re headed across the pond any time soon.

Apple has begun testing its update for Apple Maps, the test bringing more detailed information to its navigation app data being used in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

During WWDC 2020, Apple announced that it would be bringing improved Apple Maps data to additional counties. The project would expand on existing work in the United States. Its first international expansion, as part of iOS 14, the data will cover the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, and would occur sometime later in 2020.

Per Justin O’Beirne, who has kept track of Apple Maps data updates in different areas, there have been sightings of the updated map for the UK. Testing was spotted as of August 22nd, but was apparently only visible to a very small number of users, with polling pointing to only 3% of Apple devices having access.

Apple initially visited the UK and Ireland in June 2015 with its mapping vehicles, with the last subregions of each country traversed by May 2019.

Analysis of previous Apple Maps expansions has shown that it takes between 16 and 49 days of performing public testing ahead of a general release.

Along with more detailed maps outside the US, the Apple Maps update will also include enhanced cycling directions, improvements to recommendations for where to visit or eat, and EV routing.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
