Apple Dumps Trackpad Vendor Synaptics

Apple this week notified their supplier of trackpads for PowerBooks and iPods, Synaptics Inc. (NasdaqNM: SYNA), that they weren’t going to use them in PowerBooks any more. The new 2005 PowerBook G4s use a totally new trackpad that Apple developed in-house that features scrolling capability. According to a Forbes.com article “two analysts on Thursday cut their investment ratings on Synaptics Inc., citing concerns that a major customer, Apple Computer Inc., may drop Synaptics’ touchpad interface in favor of a newly released in-house design.”
No word on whether or not Apple will retain Synaptics Inc. as the suppliers for the click wheels found in the iPod.
