If you weren’t sold on the HomePod following its launch in 2017, the HomePod mini might win you over.
Apple on Tuesday announced the newest version of its smart speaker, which features a cool circular “bowl” design, is available in black or white, and is wrapped in mesh fabric. The HomePod mini is set to debut on November 16, is available for $99, and preorders start on November 6.
The company has stated that the HomePod mini emits sound in a 360-degree array, is powered by the Apple S6 chip, and features new Siri-based upgrades as well. Like the original HomePod, the product features a touch surface that lights up as a visual indicator that Siri is listening. HomePod mini supports AirPlay 2 multi-room capabilities, so you can fill your house with multiple speakers. When two HomePod minis are close to either other, they automatically form a stereo pair.
Other new features include a U1 chip, which will offer a smoother Handoff experience, allowing you to switch your music from your iOS device to the HomePod mini seamlessly. The unit also offers support for services like Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and AirPlay support, while a future software update will also enable the HomePod to work with third party music services, like Amazon Music and Pandora. Support for Spotify was not mentioned.
Apple also stated that the HomePod mini can also automatically recognize the voice of different users in the home and respond appropriately. A new Intercom mode allows you to send messages to different rooms in the house. Intercom will work across with HomePods, as well as iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
