Apple could be looking to launch its first full-screen smartphone, complete with the long-rumored under-display Face ID as the “iPhone 16 Pro” in 2024.
Per noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who posted a tweet stating that he believes Apple would be wise to adopt an under-display Face ID. Kuo also believes this would include an under-display front camera. He explains that a low-light condition is detrimental to front camera quality, and that it is in need of critical quality improvements.
The comment comes off a previous prediction that under-screen Touch ID may no longer be a feature within Apple’s short-term plans.
Kuo had previously suggested that Apple’s trajectory for implementing an under-display Face ID 2024 was likely a marketing decision made by the company.
It’s rumored that Apple’s iPhone 14 handsets, which are expected to arrive this fill, will lose the notch at the top of the screen. In its place would be a pill-shaped cutout along with a hole-punch camera. Rumors from 2019 also pointed to an iPhone prototype with an edge-to-edge screen. This would have the TrueDepth camera sensors for Face ID housed in the thin bezel above the display.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
