Rumor: Possible release dates surface for M4 MacBook Air, M4 Mac Studio, and M4 Mac Pro

With Apple’s M4 iMac, M4 Mac mini, and M4 MacBook Pro models released and on the shelves, speculation has surfaced as to when Apple will release the rest of its M4-based Mac. Per the mighty Mark Gurman of Bloomberg fame, it’s thought that an M4 MacBook Air, M4 Mac Studio, and M4 Mac Pro could be released in 2025.

M4 MacBook Air:

Apple launched its 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air notebooks in March of this year, and is said to be starting production of its M4 MacBook Air ahead of an early 2025 launch. There are no new design changes planned for the ‌MacBook Air‌ models, and the focus will be on the M4 chip, but the base model will come with at least 16GB of RAM, after Apple updated the base M3 model to 16GB, up from 8GB. It’s also thought that an M4 MacBook Air could incorporate a 12MP Centre Stage camera with Desk View support, an improvement over the current 1080p FaceTime HD camera. The ‌machines will arrive next year between January and March.

M4 Mac Studio: Apple is thought to be aiming for an early 2025 release with the M4 Mac Studio, complete with a variation of the M4 chip such as the M4 Ultra and the M4 Max. Given that the Mac mini with M4 Pro chip and Apple’s latest high-end MacBook Pro models include Thunderbolt 5 ports, it seems likely that the Mac Studio will also adopt them. Gurman has also stated that the refresh could occur between March and June of next year.

M4 Mac Pro:

When Apple updated the Mac Pro in June 2023, it included an M2 Ultra chip, officially completing the company’s transition away from Intel chips. Gurman has speculated that Apple will refresh the Mac Pro in the summer of 2025. Like the Mac Studio, the next Mac Pro will skip the M3 series. Instead it will be equipped with the highest-end version of the M4 chip, codenamed “Hidra.” It’s also speculated that this will be an “Ultra” or “Extreme” chip, and feature up to a 32-core CPU as well as an 80-core GPU. The next Mac Pro is expected to feature Thunderbolt 5 ports. It could also support up to 512GB of memory, a notable increase over the current 192GB limit.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
