Rumor: Apple may upgrade the MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and iMac to M4 chips in 2025

Following up on the company’s May release of the M4 chip in its iPad Pro, Apple is rumored to incorporate the new processor in the upcoming MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro throughout 2025.

Per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, users can expect to see a Mac mini update this year. The Mac mini skipped the M3 series of chips, and was last updated in January 2023. Back with that refresh they introduced a new model of Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip, but other than that it was a light refresh.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman noted that the M4 overhaul will mostly focus on making computers more powerful and that the Mac Pro, which was last refreshed in 2023 and reused the same design from 2019, could see a significant new redesign.

As for the Mac mini, the design has remained mostly unchanged since 2010. Since its introduction in 2010, it’s lost the DVD drive and Apple changed most of the ports, but it always remained a 7.7-inch aluminum square. Gurman posits that the Mac Pro and Mac mini will likely end up receiving “dramatic changes,” albeit the changes could also be seen with a redesigned MacBook Pro, as it’s been almost four years since Apple redesigned the notebook, and there tends to be a four to five-year redesign cycle for the computer.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
