WWDC: Apple announces messages via satellite protocol with iOS 18 update

Among the arguably cool and handy things announced during the WWDC keynote, Apple has stated that it will be adding Emergency SOS via Satellite features via messaging with the launch of its iOS 18 operating system.

The introduction of Emergency SOS via Satellite provided users with a way to get assistance when they’re out of cellular and Wi-Fi range. This, in turn, will allow the message to be pinged from a satellite if no other services are available.

The messages themselves are end-to-end encrypted and offer support for emojis and Tapbacks.

iOS 18 is scheduled for release this fall, albeit Apple has yet to offer a specific release date for the software.

The feature will only be supported by the iPhone 14 and later models.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
