Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite service, which debuted as a free-for-two-years safety feature with the iPhone 14 in 2022, will be sticking around as well as expanding to a total of 16 countries before the end of 2023.
The service, which requires an iPhone 14 or newer handset, helps connect iPhone users to emergency services even when no cellular network coverage is available. Starting in the US, Apple is expanding Emergency SOS to include roadside assistance. Apple and AAA are partnering to support the new feature.
The initial Emergency SOS via satellite service was originally launched in the United States and Canada. Apple has activated the service in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, which have or should come online in the near future.
