The AirPods headphones you’ve always wanted are now available for roughly $549.
Apple on Tuesday launched its AirPods Max headphones, a wireless, over-the-ear headset featuring high-fidelity audio, active noise cancellation, and spatial audio. The AirPods Max is available to order today, will begin shipping on December 15, and is available in space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink colors.
Where tech specs are concerned, the unit features a 40-mm Apple-designed dynamic driver that provides rich, deep bass, accurate mid-ranges, and crisp, clean high-frequency extension. A dual neodymium ring magnet motor allows AirPods Max to maintain total harmonic distortion of less than 1 percent across the entire audible range, even at maximum volume.
The canopy is covered in a breathable knit fabric that Apple states distributes weight and reduces on-head pressure, while the headband itself is made of stainless steel. Each ear piece can independently pivot and rotate to wrap itself around the user’s head, and one of the ear pieces incorporates a Digital Crown (as seen on the Apple Watch) to control volume and play or pause audio, skip tracks, answer or end phone calls, and activate Siri.
Apple has stated that the AirPods Max battery can deliver up to 20 hours of high-fidelity audio, talk time, or movie playback with Active Noise Cancellation and spatial audio enabled. The unit also arrives with a Smart Cast that puts the AirPods Max in an ultraslow power state that helps conserve energy when not in use.
Apple has also released the following video, and has not offered a free trip to outer space with it:
