Apple announced Mac OS X to the press today in an event on the Cupertino campus. CEO Steve Jobs also announced that iMovie 2, iTunes and a preview version of AppleWorks 6.1, will be available as free downloads on Saturday.
In related news, several readers reported that office supply retailer Staples began selling Mac OS X as early as yesterday (Tuesday), a full four days before the official launch date of Saturday 24 March 2001.
After hearing the reports I called two local Staples locations in the City of Brotherly Love.
Location 1:
Jason: “Hello, do you have Mac OS X?”
Staples1: “No, I have Mac OS 8…”
Location 2:
Jason: “Hello, do you have Mac OS X?”
Staples2: “Yup, I just installed it! It is US$129.00”
Jason: “Can you confirm that it is on the shelf?”
Staples2: “Yes, I purchased mine yesterday!”
Ready, Set, Go!
