ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers that has control of the .COM. .NET and .ORG domains, has recently taken the first steps towards establishing a procedure to deal with cybersquatting at its board meeting in Santiago, Chile. ICANN was set up by the US Department of Commerce to internationalize and democratize the domain name registration system, which had previously been operated by NSI under contract.
The interim president of ICANN has 45 days to appoint a drafting committee and come up with some proposed working procedures for dispute resolution, starting with definitions of cybersquatting and acting in bad faith.
