Early on Thursday, Apple released Mail Update for Mavericks 1.0 and iBooks Update 1.0.1. iBook got the usual “security and stability improvements”, which isn’t much, but it did add a .1 to the version number. Mail, on the other hand, only inched from version 7.0 build (1816) to 7.0 build (1822). While the number treatment makes this seem like a minor patch to Mail, it will probably be a big deal to anyone who has been wrestling with Mavericks’ Mail program and their Gmail accounts.
The update employs the following items:
- Fixes an issue that prevents deleting, moving, and archiving messages for users with custom Gmail settings
- Addresses an issue that may cause unread counts to be inaccurate
- Includes additional fixes that improve the compatibility and stability of Mail
Hopefully this will alleviate the Gmail headaches of early migrators and make the transition easier for others who haven’t taken the Mavericks plunge yet. Word of warning however, the update may not play nicely with any plugins you are using in Mail. I had to remove all of mine on the computer I updated because Mail would crash instantly, and not even get to the message that tells you that you have incompatible plugins and helpfully moves them to the Bundles (disabled) folder in your Library folder. Most plugins will probably have an update ready within a day or two, so better to wait until those show up so you can install them before you update Mail (unless Gmail is a more pressing problem). Keep an eye on MacUpdate for those if you aren’t already.
