I was having myriad problems with my iBook (Dual USB 500) hinge problems, Combo Drive wasn’t working, etc. I brought it into the Apple Store in Short Hills, NJ and they sent it to Apple for me. Turnaround was quick, but that isn’t what has me so excited.

When I got the machine back, I tried burning a CD in iTunes to find that my Combo drive, previously burning at 4X, could now burn CDs in half the time. They gave me an 8X drive! The disks still don’t eject reliably, though, so I’m weighing sending it back in, and thereby risking replacement with the standard drive, or occasionally having to break out the paperclip.
So I guess the moral is, be sure to break your iBook before your AppleCare warranty expires.
