Now Contact Address Book Sync: A Bad Idea

I have been an avid user of Now Up to Date and Now Contact for almost 10 years. The reason I keep using it over any other PIM is the ease of use and its networking capabilities. I use NUTD/C on my LAN and recommend it to all my clients.

I have been an avid user of Now Up to Date and Now Contact for almost 10 years. The reason I keep using it over any other PIM is the ease of use and its networking capabilities. I use NUTD/C on my LAN and recommend it to all my clients.

However today, I tried the new Address Book Sync as I work to unify my very comprehensive PIM data in NUTD/C with Address Book and my mail client, PowerMail 4.1.2.

My goal tonight was to move all data into the like-named categories I created in Address Book. My first sync worked to an extent. (I used the Now Contact to Address Book option, as my Address Book had no data in it.). I had all my data in Address Book, however it was not stored in the categories I setup in Address Book. Now, I told Address Book Sync to “Synchronize” the data.

The definitions of the word synchronize, from the Sherlock dictionary component: ”1. To cause to occur or operate with exact coincidence in time or rate” ”2. To arrange (historical events) in a synchronism so as to indicate parallel occurrence.”

Address Book Sync said that using the “synchronize” option may have an effect on Public Contact Servers. That’s the understatement of the year. I clicked to start the “synchronization” and what did I notice, but Address Book Sync proceeded to DELETE my contacts from my Now Contact data file and put them back in. I was a bit concerned. Then I opened up my Now Contact data file, and was shocked to see that years worth of notes in each of the contact records were gone. All of them. I was mad. This trojan horse of a “synchronization” within minutes occurred on all three computers connected to the Now Contact Server.

Fortunately, I al also an avid user of Retrospect, a program that has saved my butt on several occasions. I always run a backup before performing an OS upgrade, as I just did to my new 17″ Al-Book, going from 10.2.4 to 10.2.5. I also perform scripted backups of all my systems to tape overnight, and my most recent backup was a mere 3 hours old due to the OS upgrade. Thank goodness for Retrospect. I restored my Now Contact data files on all 3 client computers and the Now Contact Server data files as well.
