Late Thursday, Apple released the iMac (Mid 2010) Display Brightness Update 1.0 for its current 21.5″ iMac desktops.
The update, a 378 kilobyte download, addresses an issue with 21.5-inch iMac (Mid 2010) display brightness.
The update requires Mac OS X 10.6.4 or later to install and run and is also available via Mac OS X’s Software Update feature on qualifying hardware.

Just updated my mid 2010 21.5″ iMac and the brightness maximum has been increased! i was really disappointed when I received it a month ago because it just seemed really dim. Now it is quite bright, as bright as my 24″ Dell Ultrasharp monitor. I'm stoked!
Apple replaced my mid 2009 21.5″ iMac with a newer mid 2010 version after a hardware failure. The previous iMac had an amazingly bright screen. I was disappointed when I got home with my new iMac and noticed that the screen was about 25% dimmer compared to the previous model. I also noticed a high pitched sound coming from the iMac when I set the screen to it's brightest setting. This was giving me a headache.
I just downloaded and installed the screen update and upon rebooting, found that I was able to set the screen back to the brightness I was used to with my old iMac and also that the sound that was bothering me so much had gone away.
