3Dfx Brings Generic Voodoo2 and Voodoo 3 to the Mac!

“In the next few weeks,”3dfx Interactive has decided to release generic Mac drivers for its Voodoo2 and Voodoo3 PCI graphics accelerators. They will be available free of charge on their web site! These drivers will support Glide 2.x and 3.x, but will be officially unsupported by the company. IMG has the full story which broke on USENET with a post from Senior Software Engineer of Cross-Platform Development Kenneth Dyke. IMG says that the new drivers will allow Mac users to buy a garden variety PC Voodoo2 or Voodoo3 card, whack in the 3Dfx drivers and be ready to go. IMG notes that, unfortunately, by lacking support and specific drivers, the Mac implimentation will not equal that available on the PC. Interestingly, they chose to use Mesa rather than liscense Apple’s OpenGL libraries, thus leaving support for OpenGL reliant Mac games somewhat up in the air.
